Course Description

This Airway Integration Masterclass is designed for dental professionals seeking a deeper understanding of whole-body health who want to truly recognize the critical role airway dysfunction has on oral-systemic health, growth and development, and long-term patient outcomes. It provides an evidence-based framework for screening, identifying, and integrating airway focused care into everyday dental practices.

Participants will develop an in-depth understanding of how airway dysfunction impacts the oral ecosystem and contributes to common clinical presentations such as chronic gingival inflammation, malocclusion, high caries rates, and impaired healing. A comprehensive review of upper airway anatomy will provide the fundamental knowledge needed to recognize subtle signs of airway dysfunction that have lasting impacts on patients throughout their lifetime.

By the end of this masterclass, participants will be equipped with a systematic approach they can use chairside within existing workflows to better identify airway dysfunction, recognize its implications on oral-systemic health patterns, communicate findings with patients, and advise patients on appropriate interventions.

Course Objectives

  • Describe the development and shifts that occur within dental biofilms and the oral ecosystem to better understand how oral dysbiosis and overall systemic health are impacted by airway dysfunction
  • Assess structures of the upper airway and orofacial complex and determine their clinical significance as indicators of dysfunctional breathing and airway restriction
  • Apply evidence-based, chairside screening and assessment techniques to appropriately identify tethered oral tissues, orofacial myofunctional disorders, and airway related risk factors during routine dental examinations
  • Integrate airway-focused protocols into existing workflows to enhance early detection and comprehensive, interdisciplinary care

As a mom to three children with tethered oral tissues and chronic airway dysfunction, I know firsthand how challenging it can be navigating how to properly identify and address these concerns.
